Social Ministries

Social Ministries – With the blessing of the Congregational Council, a formal Social Ministries Team is being established. The team will be led by Melody Costello & Hillary Walker. The congregation can expect to see various ways to volunteer within and outside of our community. We will also be putting out information from the ELCA and our NEO Synod on social justice issues; look for these in St. Matthew’s regular communication streams. We have team members in place to head up some projects already and we will work with our other teams in shared ministry opportunities. We welcome new members to join the team; share your ideas and gifts; and ask questions. Our first get together will be held on Wednesday, October 1 at 6:30pm at Cool Beans. Contact Melody or Hillary with any questions.

New Social Justice Awareness Ministry – Our purpose is to educate, promote, and support social justice issues, marginalized communities, and creation care. As a church, we affirm God’s call through our 1991 social statement The Church in Society: A Lutheran Perspective: "Along with all citizens, Christians have the responsibility to defend human rights and to work for freedom, justice, peace, environmental well-being and good order in public life." To that end, the National ELCA and our Northeastern Ohio Synod address pressing social justice issues through the filter of discernment, scripture, Social Statements and Social Messages. This ministry hopes to make this information more easily available by providing notifications regarding letters from the presiding bishop, ELCA advocacy notices, ELCA advocacy notices and social justice information, and available actions you may choose to take. Look for messages in the Shout-Out, bulletins, social media, etc. Anyone who is called to be a part of this ministry, contact Dan Walker at sawalkdj@gmail.com.
