Day 3 Reflection

“But I’m not really that handy!” That was the concern running through my mind before committing to this trip to Carter County, TN. But throwing my hat into the ring has been the right call!

It’s been 2 years since hurricane Helene struck this community. But even 2 years later, there are so many opportunities to help good people, who still have so many needs beyond what we can accomplish in a week of service. Whether it’s been building and installing handrails and spindles for a staircase, staining a newly built deck walkway for a grandma, her daughter and grandson, or pulling up carpet staples before a new floor gets installed (oof)!, the appreciation these people have for our time and effort is inspiring.

The daily devotions we share as group, provide an opportunity to reflect on what we saw and felt each day. The common thread of our devotional time has centered on ‘service’ and ‘humility’. One of our closing prayers has stuck with me this week:

God of humility,

Let us remember that we serve as you served.

That we are not more, but simply able.

That we come as your body, not our own.

And that we are not Jesus,

But called to adopt his mind and heart for service. Amen.

So even if I’m not the “handiest” person here, I can still set my heart and mind to serve in a way that is pleasing to God.
