The Luther Choir, led by Rachel Knaggs, sang "It is well with My Soul" during the Sunday, November 2 worship service. Such a fitting anthem on the day that we began our disaster relief ministry in Tennessee.

The story behind "It is Well with My Soul" is a testament to finding peace amidst tragedy. It was written by Horatio Spafford in 1873 after he suffered immense loss, including losing his fortune in the Great Chicago Fire and, most tragically, his four young daughters in a shipwreck while they were sailing to Europe. Spafford, who was delayed in Chicago on business, wrote the hymn's lyrics while on a ship crossing the Atlantic to meet his grieving wife, Anna, who had survived the disaster. The captain had pointed out the spot where the ship went down, and in that location, Spafford was inspired to write the words that have become a source of comfort for many.

What a way that Horatio channeled his grief. I have always loved this song.
